The Purchase
Actually, the original 3/60 motherboard was donated by
Benji, who felt that it wouldn't be
worth the space it would have taken up in his trash can. 4 megs of RAM were scounged up from
Jeff's stash, another 12 were bought at Electronic Planet in Wobern for way too much
money ($15 a meg!), and another 8 were bought off someone on the 'net for a much more
reasonable $4/meg. A 1 GB hard drive eventually found it's way over from
Xensei surplus, a SCSI case, mouse and keybord were had
in Wobern for $45, a 19" Sun monitor was bought off the 'net for $200 (Plus $75 shipping -
Ouch!), and finally, the ultimate score, an original Sun 3/60 case and power supply from the
New Hampshire branch of Electronic Planet, for the whopping sum of $15! It was a long
drive that day, but well worth it.
Total: $515.00. Not bad for a fully loaded Sun.
The construction of Jeff's second Sun, Frostheave, is now underway though, and so far it's
proving to be an even better buy... 3/60, 19" color, 200 MB drive, 16 MB RAM, total so far:
less than $350.00.!
